Larry Gabriel Bridge Gains ACEC Merit Award
2014-03-13

Farnsworth  Group was recently awarded a merit award by the American Council of Engineering  Companies (ACEC) in the 2014 Illinois Engineering Excellence Awards  Competition.

Farnsworth  Group's award winning project, Larry Gabriel Bridge on the Fox River Trail, was  selected in the Small Projects category. Entries are judged on the basis of engineering  excellence, the degree to which the client's needs are met and the benefits to  the public welfare and private practice of engineering.

When the Fox River Trail System was  developed in 1981, it included an existing bridge that was constructed in 1931  and located at Island Park in Geneva, Illinois.  By 2004, the superstructure had deteriorated beyond repair. Farnsworth Group designed a new  superstructure for the Geneva Park District that maintained the historical  aesthetics, while incorporating modern design standards.

Approximately 200' of the trail itself  north and south of the bridge was replaced and a pedestrian overlook area was  added. Decorative metal railings were  included as an additional safety feature. The rehabilitation of the Larry Gabriel Bridge  not only provides aesthetic and safety improvements, but also preserves an  essential connection to this 100-plus-mile trail system for pedestrians and  bicyclists.

The  award was presented during a luncheon on February 7, 2014 at the Marriott in  Bloomington-Normal, Illinois.
