Carl Sandburg College sought to strengthen and expand its science, healthcare, and technology programs while positioning the institution for future academic growth.
Existing programs were dispersed across campus, limiting opportunities for collaboration and creating challenges in adapting to evolving curriculum and workforce demands.
Farnsworth Group partnered with Carl Sandburg College to plan and design a new approximately 47,000 SF Science & Technology Center that consolidates natural sciences, health sciences, and computer science programs into a centralized academic hub. The facility incorporates flexible laboratories, simulation and skills training spaces, classrooms, and collaborative environments designed to accommodate current program needs while adapting to future technologies and emerging disciplines. Farnsworth Group provided planning, architecture, interiors, landscape architecture, and full engineering services under a long-term campus partnership.
The new center creates an interdisciplinary learning environment that enhances student engagement, improves operational efficiency, and supports workforce-focused education. Flexible spaces allow the college to respond to changing educational demands while providing modern facilities for programs including biology, chemistry, physics, nursing, dental hygiene, medical assisting, and simulation-based healthcare training.
Completed in August 2024, the $28.2 million facility serves as the first phase of a larger campus transformation initiative and establishes a new flagship destination for science and technology education on the 105-acre campus. The project unites multiple academic disciplines within a single state-of-the-art facility designed to support long-term institutional growth.
