The Village of Mahomet sought to transform a core block of its Central Business District into a more inviting, pedestrian-friendly destination while maintaining the everyday functionality of a downtown street.

Farnsworth Group developed a distinctive curbless shared-street concept that allows pedestrians and vehicles to safely interact within a unified streetscape. The flexible design accommodates daily parking needs while allowing the street to function as a plaza-like community space for special events.

Traffic-calming features, including ramps at both ends of the block, a midblock chicane, contrasting brick crosswalks, decorative bollards and landscape planters, help define the shared environment and encourage safer movement. Native landscaping and shade trees add greenery, while a coordinated palette of brick pavers and colored concrete reinforces the plaza character. Contrasting tan concrete defines accessible routes and visually connects the streetscape.

Coordinated site amenities, vehicular lighting and overhead festoon lighting complete the transformation, creating a flexible downtown environment designed to serve the community day to day while providing an inviting setting for gatherings and special events.
