Fairbury Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements

Farnsworth Group is providing wastewater design solutions for both the wastewater treatment plant and the CSO collection system as part of the City of Fairbury's CSO Long-Term Control Plan.

The plant had not undergone any significant upgrades since 1977 and required extensive improvements to ensure compliance with NPDES limits. The plant is rated for a daily average flow of 0.66 MGD and a daily max flow of 2.4 MGD. The improvements include:

  • New CSO 003 overflow structure + New headworks building, including a mechanical sanitary fine screen, CSO bar screen, and two CSO propeller pumps for 20 MGD total pumping capacity
  • New influent pump station with three submersible pumps in two wet wells on VFDs
  • New grit building with a vortex grit chamber, grit pumps, and a grit washer
  • Rehabilitation of the existing aeration basins with a new layout, new diffusers, and gas mixing
  • Conversion of the existing clarifier basins into new aeration basins
  • Two new 50' diameter secondary clarifiers with a scum pump station
  • Rehabilitation of the sludge building with three RAS pumps in the lower level and two blowers on the upper level for the circular digester
  • Addition of one digester to complement the existing three digesters
  • New UV channel and equipment + New aeration basin building with electrical room, gas mixing compressors, non-potable water pumps, and two sludge transfer pumps
  • Rehabilitation of the existing control building with four new aeration turbo blowers for the aeration basins, digesters, and CSO lagoon
  • New dewatering building with a screw press, sludge conveyors, and polymer mixing and storage
  • New sludge canopy for dewatered sludge storage and conveyor discharge
  • Rehabilitation of the 10MG CSO lagoon with a new aeration, chlorination basin, and discharge pipe
  • New CSO basin chlorination building with tablet chlorination equipment
  • New site piping and electrical ductbanks
  • New electrical upgrades with a backup generator, main switchboard, and six motor control centers
  • New controls with multiple control panels, a fiber network between all the plant structures, a SCADA computer, and off-site notifications and control capabilities
  • Finish site grading and pavement improvements
