New Car Rental Center Serves Atlanta Airport
The Consolidated Car Rental facility was among the final projects of a 10-year expansion plan at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Farnsworth Group provided commissioning services for HVAC, plumbing water, life safety, electrical, emergency power, indoor air quality and paging systems for this $480 million complex, totaling 200,000 SF. The facilities are west of Interstate 85 on 100 acres that already served as rental car space. Hartsfield-Jackson Development Group administered the project for the City of Atlanta Department of Aviation.
The project included:
- A Customer Service Center with 141,500 SF on three levels plus 19,200 SF Automated People Mover (APM) station on a fourth level.
- A 19,500 SF APM station for the Georgia International Convention Center.
- A 20,000 SF APM station for the Central Passenger Terminal Center.
Other features of the complex were two 4-level garage structures totaling 8,500 spaces, on-site roadways and vehicle storage areas, fueling facilities with 140 pumps, wash facilities with 30 bays, a 17-acre public car park, and a maintenance facility.
The underground APM system is a unique feature of the airport expansion. Consisting of nine 4-car trains on a 3.5-mile loop track connecting all terminal concourses, the system will help reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality by eliminating the need for shuttle buses.
